If you wonder why should do a pumpkin painting. Well, it’s not only just a fun activity but also could be a Halloween decoration for your house. I highly recommend doing this with a friend or family member to make it more fun and enjoy it better.

I will go through some important things as well we how you can get fun ideas. Please don’t forget to share your thoughts about this post after you finished reading it.

Pick the best pumpkin for painting

Pick the best pumpkin for painting

One of the crucial steps that should be done is deciding which pumpkin is best for pumpkin painting. There are a few steps that could help you achieve that. Think of it as a canvas and you need to choose a good canvas for your drawing to be able to have great results at the end.

Choose your painting and style

Well, the first thing that could help you choose the best pumpkin is the type of painting you want to do. This will allow you to choose a size, shape, and any other measures important.

Honestly, I feel like anyone would be lost if they were to choose a pumpkin for painting without knowing what they would paint. Therefore, for the best results, make sure to choose what you will paint on the pumpkin and it will make the search for one much easier.

Something that will last longer

Another thing you should pay attention to when picking the best pumpkin is how long it will last. You don’t want something will last a day or two. Even a week is not the best because pumpkin painting would be decoration for the house and should last longer. Therefore, consider asking for a pumpkin that will last for a long time.

This is very important if you planning to use it for the whole fall season. Make sure to pay attention to the weight of the pumpkin because if it’s heavier, that means often it’s fresh and will last longer.

Prepping all the essential supplies for pumpkin painting

You will need to make sure that you have all the important supplies and tools that are important for your pumpkin painting session.

Something you should know, the tools will be different depending on what you will paint. Each pumpkin painting will require more or less tools. Therefore, make sure you have your painting ideas ready.

These are the main tools that are needed for every painting:

  • The first one is acrylic paints: Water-based acrylic paints are perfect for the job. You can have them in different colors and will give you the perfect design in mind. Any choice of watercolors that you have might work depending on your pumpkin painting.
  • Prepare paint brushes: Another important tool is the pain brushes which will help a lot in painting. Make sure to get different sizes as well that way can draw everything. Some areas require a smaller brush to pain, you know.
  • Paper towel and water cup: You will need to keep these two close as you will use them to clean the brush as you paint. They are very important for this process.
  • Palette or plate: This is going to be essential when mixing colors. Therefore, you need to make sure it’s prepped as well if you will mix colors.
  • The Painters tape: It’s an optional tool but its good to create lines and make your drawing perfectly lined up. You can use anything you want such as a pencil or something you have that can help you with this.
  • Sponges: If you looking to add base coats or create texture, this will come in handy and help with that. Go for a round sponge brush because it will be a great tool.
  • Aprons or old clothes: During the pumpkin painting process, you will need to keep yourself clean with zero paint on you. Therefore, this will be very important to have before you get started.
  • Good Sealant Spray; It’s crucial to make sure you have a good sealant spray to protect your painting and make it last a long time.

These are some of the important tools that will be used for pumpkin painting. As I mentioned earlier, tools could be different based on the drawing and what you want to do.

Awesome and fun theme ideas for your painted pumpkin

Awesome and fun theme ideas for your painted pumpkin

If you are uncertain what to paint for this Halloween season or fall. I would like to mention some recommendations that might be interesting to you. You can use them to find the best pumpkin painting that you want to do. Just remember to choose something you like and also something that you can draw.

Don’t feel discouraged if you don’t know how to paint. Try tutorials on the internet that are easy to follow. Maybe ask an artist friend to work with you on a painting. There are always ways that could help you paint a good pumpkin painting.

Before I mention the recommendations, here are some tips for choosing a good paint;

  1. Brainstorm ideas with a friend to find something creative.
  2. Check other paintings on the internet using Pinterest or any platform to find inspiration to help you.
  3. Write ideas in your journal as you get them in your mind as it will be good to return to them later and find more ideas.

1- Try some classic Halloween painting

You can try painting some of the classic Halloween decorations such as bats, ghosts, or even witches. You can add some creativity to it such as a bat on a branch painted on the pumpkin.

Spooky design will always be good for Halloween. However, there are new creative ways that you can add to these paintings to make them look even better.

2- Nature paintings

I feel like this is something easy many of us can do which painting nature on the pumpkin. Such as sunflower, fall leaves, or foliage but choose a pumpkin color that is white for best results. You can try acorns which can add good decoration as well.

You can look around you for nature inspiration or even on the internet. There are many ideas that you can use for your pumpkin painting and great for this fall season decoration.

3- Favorite icons

Explore the list of your favorite characters whether in a TV show, animated movie, games, or even in a book. For me, I would choose an animated character as love to have them as a decoration.

This is another good way to find new inspiration for your pumpkin painting and try something different. Also, make it a good decoration for this fall season.

4- Whimsical creatures:

You can use imagination for inspiration as well. Try painting your mythical creature such as a unicorn, dragon, or fairy. There are many creatures that you can choose from such as goblins, mermaids, and more.

Take your time and find the best one that you want to paint. Also, make sure it’s something you can pain as well without struggling to make the process fun. Maybe you can learn and practice before you actually start painting.

Things to consider to make your paint last longer

Alright, now it’s time to think of important steps to take after you finish painting. This will help you make the most of your pumpkin painting and ensure it lasts for a long time.

Ensure a safe spot

Think of your painting as a piece of art and make sure that you put it in a safe spot. This means out of kids’ reach to avoid ruining it. Also, best to put it inside the house or in an area or a cover on the top to prevent rain and harsh sunlight that would mess with your paint.

Careful and gentle handling

You will need to be careful with handling the pumpkin painting to avoid messing up your work. If you want to move it somewhere, do it carefully. When you are done painting and want to take it to the spot, make sure to be gentle and careful with the process.

Good environment

Make sure to place your pumpkin in a cool and dry environment to avoid deterioration. Make sure to find a place where it will stay comfortable and cool.

Regular check for mold

Don’t forget to check your pumpkin from time to time to ensure there is no mold or anything harmful or bad happening to your pumpkin. This way, you will make sure everything is going well and help you to protect your work to stay longer.

I mentioned above in the tools section that you need to use sealant spray and it’s important to keep your work for a long time. Since I already mentioned earlier about it, I thought to just share a reminder here as it’s crucial to use that tool.

We paint pumpkins every year for Halloween. The kids always hated the mess of actual carving, and I always loved that they weren’t using knives. LOL

Truth be told, as much as I love Halloween and fall, I have not painted a pumpkin. I know such a party foul. I really do need to fix that this year and you have great tips for someone like me who is new to this activity. I love the idea that it doesn’t have to be Halloween themed but you can also paint your pumpkin with anything that comes to mind. I can’t wait to try this out over the weekend and see what I come up with!

Pumpkin painting is a fun and creative way to embrace the fall season. It’s a great alternative to traditional carving, especially for kids or those looking for a less messy option. Pick a pumpkin with a smooth surface for easy painting. White pumpkins (sometimes called “ghost pumpkins”) are perfect for vibrant designs since they show off colors better than traditional orange ones.
