How long does it take to learn a new language

Hello everyone and welcome to my new post for this week. It’s the end of the first half week of this month. I hope you guys doing well. Today I want to talk about something interesting. And I know this is necessary for a lot of people. Especially, people who travel want to know how long does it take to learn a new language. Well, I want to also mention how can you speed up the process of learning a language.

There will be also some tips that can help you to increase your knowledge faster. I’m going to share my throughs and opinions on this. Hopefully, you will find it helpful somehow with your journey of learning a new language. I love knowing other languages because on the list now is Being fluent in Chinese and Spanish.

How long does it take to learn a new language

I want to go through some factors that can allow you to learn faster. And also what is the best way to learn. You could be a student learning in a foreign service institute. Maybe attending classes in a language school. Both ways are effective if you would want to do that. But the length would be determined for you by the school(which is the duration of the study).

Another thing that we need to pay attention to is how we learn. Because that can make us continue studying or stop if it gets boring or too complicated. The first thing you need to be determined to learn is that language. You need to make it a priority to learn that language and set up a “how learn” process for that new language.

Q: How can you be determined to learn a new language?

A: First develop passion and be curious all the time. This is something you can develop over time and not too fast. For example, try challenging yourself to speak with your foreign friend in their language. When traveling, try to speak with people in their language. It can help to light the spark to learning a new language and be determined. Setting your goal to learn is another good way.

I mentioned being determined because if you don’t have it. It won’t last long as you will get bored and think it’s difficult and quit. Therefore, it’s very important to have the determination first. And then you can focus on language learning. Which can be easy but it also can be difficult, you know.

Benefits of learning a new language

  • Talking with others when traveling
  • Able to talk with cashiers and workers in the restaurant in other languages
  • Have the chance to understand other people
  • Speak with friends in their language

These can be great reasons and benefits of why you need to learn a new language. Something you should know before how long does it take to learn a new language. Because if there is something to let you learn the language. That can play a big role in learning the language.

How to improve language skills with these awesome tips

Learning a foreign language such as Spanish or English to other people in a different language. Can be fun to learn if you make it and try different things. It doesn’t matter what type of language. I highly recommend you focus the how to learn a language and process. And make sure that it’s effective and fun that way you will be sure it will help you.

Q: How long does it take to learn a new language?

A: The question you guys are waiting for. And the answer is the length depends on you and your intention. Also, depending on what you do. Sometimes can take weeks, months, or even years. Allow me to explain what I mean by this answer and what are the intentions.

There is a category of intentions for me:

  1. Slow pace (As a hobby or for fun)
  2. Fast pace (serious to learn and have clear goals)
  3. Trying to be influent in the language
  4. Just learning some words to use them

These can play a big part in your language learning. Even if you take classes by the hours. For example, 600 hours, 750 hours, or even 900 hours. Whatever hours you choose, make sure to specify which category you fit in. Because that will help you to know how long you will take to learn a language.

Factors that could slow your language learning process:

This is very important to know because it may not be obvious to you in some languages. You might think that you can master it in a short time. But with many people already tried before, they already know the level of skills and time you need to know a language. And I’m talking about aiming for fluency in a language.

  • The type of language you want to learn

Some languages can be very difficult to learn in a short time. As the Chinese language is not so easy and needs time to learn it. Also, if you are looking to learn the Japanese language it can be difficult for their letters and pronunciations. This can slow your process of learning a new language.

  • Teachers or methods you use to learn

It’s important to know that these two can play a big part in your language-learning process. And can help you learn fast or slow. When the teacher and method are good and effective. That would give you less time to learn a new language than having a bad method or lazy teacher.

FYI

This can be good when looking for schools to learn the language. You need to check reviews and see how their teachers. Trust me, you would be wasting money if you apply for a school with a not-good reputation. Do your research on the school before you apply to it.

  • Your focus on the important things
what to do to learn language

Some people might think that just learning words can help you to be fluent in that language. And focus on one thing which can take a long time to finish. However, you need to maintain and draw your focus on as many as possible. For example, writing sentences, and pronouncing words. Make a full sentence and use it with someone in that language. You can see the focus on many things and not just one thing.

These are some of the factors that could slow your process when you trying to learn something new. Since there are things to slow, you will find things that can speed up the process. And that is what I will talk about. Doing the opposite things of what I mentioned above can also be a way to speed up the language-learning process.

Factors that can speed up the process to learn a new language

You will need to make sure to do these things if you want to learn faster. Because without these things and any other important thing. It will take you more than weeks, months, or even years. I don’t think you would be able to finish and learn. Therefore, that’s why you need to do additional things to help you learn faster.

  • The number of things you do
laptop and papers.

Well, you can be taking a class or even a preparatory year course. Whatever the main thing you use to learn the language. Make sure to add other things. Such as daily practices and watching movies with subtitles. These can be small but it does help a lot to speed up the process. Find what you can do to add it to the list of things to do. Maybe can be having a daily conversation with friends or watching additional online classes.

  • Time you spend learning every day

Some people might spend one hour a day. Thinking that would be enough. However, if you want to do that, it would make you take longer time overall to master the language. I’m talking about when you want to be fluent in that language. Which needs more hours every day. If you spend more hours, you will spend less time overall but make sure it’s effective and good.

  • How many times do you practice
practice language.

Another important thing that can help you to speed up the process is practicing. I would say the more you practice, the faster you will master that language. Therefore, make sure to practice more if you want to spend a short time. Don’t depend on one-time practice a day. You can do that if you want to take a longer time.

And there are more that I will add to the list that can help you learn faster. Also, what could make you learn slower? Both can help you in the process. However, for now, I think these can be enough for you to start. It will help with the overall time to master a language.

This is a really good post. As someone who speaks four languages, I’d like to add that talking to other people in the language helps a lot too. But the other tips are on point. You do need time and dedication.

Learning new languages is quite a process – but, one that is well worth the efforts. I’m working on brushing up on Spanish (my sister started learning the language and I’m trying to freshen up my skills, too.)

I’m in the slow-pace mode now. I’m just learning a few Spanish/Italian/Korean words as a hobby. I think it would be really nice to speak another language fluently. It will really help me if I travel to other countries someday.

As a language teacher myself, I agree with most of what you wrote here. But to emphasize, the most important factor that determines how long one takes to learn a language is MOTIVATION. The more internal it is, the more likely the person will learn faster. So people should ask themselves “why” they’re learning a new language.

One-on-one practice is everything! I am not sure how far will you go with just learning. There are people that speak really fast in other languages but with not-so-great grammar. And there are people that are trying with grammar and word choice but are so slow in conversation…
