The Chao Phraya, River of Kings, meanders through the vast metropolis of Bangkok on its way to the Gulf of Thailand. A network of canals which are called khlong in Thai extends the river’s reach throughout the city, which some over the years have dubbed “the Venice of the East”.
Similarly to the original Venice’s network of waterways, the Chao Phraya provides a major artery for transportation with a busy network of cross-river ferries, river buses, and water taxis, the famed longtail boats named for their long-shafted, swivel-mounted propellers.
Around 16 boat lines are currently in operation on the canals and the Chao Phraya, including commuter lines as well as pleasure cruises.
